Details

The UPSIT table captures information on the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test. In 2020 a Revised version of the test was released. Some sites in the Extended PPMI study are using the Original version of the test, while others are using the Revised version. The variable UPSITFORM records which version was used.

SCENT Variables

For each question in the UPSIT exam, there are two corresponding variables: one records the participant’s response (SCENT_[NUMBER]_RESPONSE) and the other records whether that response was correct (SCENT_[NUMBER]_CORRECT). In PPMI 1.0, these variables for each question were captured in the ind_upsit table. The UPSIT table in PPMI 1.0 was a derived table created from the information in the ind_upsit table. There were four variables in the UPSIT table, each of which captured the derived score from each UPSIT Booklet. In PPMI 2.0, the response and correct variables are stored in this UPSIT table.

Percentile

The TOTAL_CORRECT variable captures a participant’s score on the UPSIT exam. It is calculated as the sum of correct items out of 40, with each question worth one point. If any question is missing, the entire score will be null. Percentile is stored in UPSIT_PRCNTGE and is calculated using a lookup table based on the participant’s TOTAL_CORRECT score, their sex, and their age at the time of the test. The UPSIT_PRCTVER variable indicates which version of the lookup table was used to calculate the score. UPSIT_PRCNTGE will be re-calculated for all records whenever a new version of the percentile lookup table is created for the PPMI study.
